Benefits of LAP-BAND® Surgery
LAP-BAND® surgery has the unique advantage of being a reversible procedure. Because it does not require Dr. Alexander to surgically alter the digestive tract - unlike gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy - the LAP-BAND® System can be removed, restoring the patient's stomach to its original size and shape. Because gastric banding is the least invasive form of bariatric surgery, it typically has a shorter recovery time.
The LAP-BAND® Procedure
Through a few small incisions, the LAP-BAND® System - an inflatable silicone ring - is positioned around the stomach to create a stomach pouch with a much smaller capacity than the full stomach. The band is later filled with a saline solution to adjust the size of the stomach outlet, which helps determine how fast weight is lost.
The gastric band is adjustable, so our Dallas-area LAP-BAND® surgery patients from Fort Worth and elsewhere can have the system fine-tuned after surgery to minimize side effects and maximize weight loss. The band is adjusted through an access port placed just beneath the skin, eliminating the need for revision surgery in many cases.
